2016 Cadillac ATS-V vs. 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 S - Head 2 Head

In fact more than any other car can think of this thing causes a lot of dudes in their mid-twenty's make like $40,000 a year to file chapter eleven just had the chance to drive it for a few months it's got some kind of special sauce with the m3 is the longer you're on top of the mountain the more people rise up and try and knock peak and here are two such cars we have the highly-anticipated Cadillac ATS V as well as the all new mercedes-benz c63 S AMG.

2016 Cadillac ATS-V vs. 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 S - Head 2 Head

Just like boxing you don't show up and get to fight the champ no first you have to become a contender which one of these two that has the moves to take the belt away from the BMW there's only one way to find out the mighty AMG with its 503 horsepower V8 sixty miles an hour in four seconds flat we simply weren't prepared for how athletic the Cadillac.

Is the ATSV hits sixty miles an hour in 3.7 seconds the c63 ripped through the quarter mile 12.2 seconds at a 119.5 miles per hour in the quarter mile the ATS-V beats the AMG doing so and 12.1 seconds at a 116.2 miles per hour with carbon ceramic rotors up front the AMG is able to stop from sixty miles an hour in 101 feet with only steel rotors about four corners the Cadillac to stops from sixty.

In nineteen ninety feet check this out around our figure 8 course the c63 needs only 24.1 seconds just to give you a little bit of perspective a Porsche 911 Carrera S needs 23.9 seconds that's right a big four door mercedes is only two tenths of a second off of the 911 around a handling and the ATS-V simple flies around the figure eight 23.7 seconds again to give.

You a little bit of perspective if Ferrari 458 Italia so in 23.6 seconds yes friends we live in a world where a four-door Cadillac is only one tenth of a second behind a mid-engine Italian supercar this is the Cadillac cts-v in some way is the successor to the cts-v although there is a new larger cts-v coming in broad strokes what we have here we've got a four door sport sedan with a 3.6 liter twin-turbo v-6 and four hundred

And sixty five horsepower remember the M3 is only raided at 325 horsepower and this particular one has an eight-speed automatic transmission though if you want it though so you want it they'll sell you a six-speed manual you can also get a two door coupe or starting on the outside this car has some mega uber whole prestige remember that's that german term which means like passing prowl or passing priority basically in English when this sucker is all up in your rearview mirror it is

Intimidating I think it's a very good looking car from the front and the side too bad from the rear I love that little kicked up duck bill spoiler I like the quad pipes that are kind of in board wheels and tires look good it's a it's a nice looking aggressive sport sedan move on to the interior is kind of a different story and sadly it's sort of becoming the same old cadillac story seats are actually very good ats-v it is he comes with

These Recaro buckets they gots lots three racing harness really good seats really holds you in place and then of course there's cue more than cue there's the fact that there's no knobs it's all touch control and just none of it works very well it just doesn't work well my advice and I've said this apprentices video throw it in the garbage and start over people want knobs they gotta start over and and a little birdie tells me there.

Is turning over the big takeaway is if everything else on like let's say this and that mercedes are even except for the entertainment system with Mercedes just because this is worse now the two cars are not even so there's a lot of other things to consider like the way it drives ats-v drives very good we knew the ATS had a wonderful chassis we knew the ats-v has communicated steering we were hoping

That when they put the v badge on it it would just get better and totally did outstanding world class chassis outstanding steering upstanding handling outstanding grip this is one of the best handling cars in the world this might be the best handling sedan ever made just a plus not a plus for the engine now it actually has plenty of power and has tons of mid-range torque which I like just don't sound good and this one is no exception.

Especially those two turbochargers plumed on to it and I think what it does is you know especially compared to the c63 noises part of what makes it fun and since so muted you don't feel like you're going as fast as you actually are and you are going quite fast in this car one might say the solutions drop a v8 in here and I'm totally down with that a small block would absolutely fit again due to performance it doesn't need it the terms of sound and just.

Kind of prestige it would be nice also the transmission it's a 8 speed auto not a dual-clutch its prettty good this car the dual-clutch would just be tits on glass just excellent the breaks so this car unlike everything else in the competitive set has 18 inch wheels and as a result they can't put in massive six piston calipers like the C 63 has instead it has four piston calipers and it also doesn't have carbon ceramic brakes do you need the breaks.

Actually no the breaks on this car incredible and a pretty sure we're going to find this out at the track they don't seem to fade which is great so what cadillac has done here with their v division is done here credibly competent wonderful to drive sports sedan that I think has a really good chance of taking the title away from the M3 let's see what AMG's come up.

And now I'm rolling in the mercedes-benz c63 s AMG what does the S stand for basically more power the standards c63 has 463 horsepower this sucker has five hundred and three all that power comes from the brand new 4 liter twin-turbo v8 that's right it's got a v8 everyone else in the segment is down to a six this is a v8 it's awesome that should I just love the fact is v8.

All that power goes through a seven-speed Automatic transmission it's the old workhorse seven G tronic whatever they call it i think is keeping a better rather have a dual clutch but unlike the Cadillac I'm not sitting here thinking God I wish I had another transmission it works well it's programmed very smartly it's not overly aggressive nice transmission.

From the outside not a good looking car its ok I liked the rear end I liked that pinched looking looks just like the s class it's just ok just something about that the headlights bug me maybe looks too much at the CLA I don't know I'm not in love the way this car to s class look totally different story when you get inside the car look at look at this interior they just took a s class and shrank it and then added this beautiful wooden waterfall so I want him special props for not having any nonsense carbon

Fiber trim pieces the car weighs 3940 pound your not fooling anybody doesn't need carbon fiber in the inside wood metal leather those are the components that make up a great interior and they're all here little bit of plastic sure but this is a c-class and then my favorite part is on the steering wheel where you put your hands in 93 Alcantara that's the best material to hold onto and here it is.

So I was looking at the build sheet for this car and I see carbon ceramic brakes fifty four hundred bucks I'm going like wow look yes thats a ton of money but you look at the m3 carbon ceramic brakes or nine thousand dollars and what BMW doesn't tell you have to buy a $2,000 set of wheels to fit this only $5400 and only the front are carbon ceramic the rear is steal its just cheese ball Imma tell you from driving you don't need them but it just comes off kind of funny you know anyways I think I like the cadillacs breaks like

Much better but he's a really good too man but seriously this is so good up shift sounds like someone out behind the car snapping a two-by-four with their knee how does AMG out of all the car makers in the world they can take engine with turbos and make it sound good no one else can do it they sound like hair dryers this just sounds like a angry V8 love it

As far as AMG's go the classic almost lazy way to describe what it's like to drive a AMG is that you have iron fist and a velvet glove I'm here to tell you no this car is more and Iron Fist in a Iron glove it's just brutal and yes part of that is the fury of the V8 but also a big part of that's just the way it handles very aggressive car I love what they did with the steering if you look at the front wheels you got a lot of negative camber in them and that's because it's front heavy and it'll roll over on it's tires but because it turns in well.

Doesn't push a lot for such a nose heavy car and when you get on the power and there's tons of power it doesn't just fishtail around it can if your goofing around yes you can do that but it's a car wants to get on a corner want to keep going great job with this car handles that hasn't been strong suit for AMG they've always made great engine for the never really made great handling cars you can say the M3 handles better can't say that anymore.

But aside from the handling most impresses me about the C 63 is the confidence inspires in the driver quick example we're doing your editorial loop so so before we start filming videos you know a bunch of editors drive all the cars can figure out what's what and i cant talk about on-camera we're doing that and I'm in the m3 and Scott Evans is behind me in the ATS-V and I just couldn't shake them use just on me like white on rice I got this car jumped

Into the M3 and I lost him three or four times I couldn't even see my rearview mirror mile down the road I don't think this car is any faster in a straight line stuff it's kinda not but I'm so confident I'm just gone I just fly in this thing the ATS-V and the m3 is just not like that so up here in the canyons out on a winding roads it's the combination of the sound of the V8.

the extra power from the V8 the confidence this car just inspired me I prefer the C 63 here to the ATS-V but let's see what Randy Pope has to say about that I got my Cadillac ATS-V in the track mode I got the traction control stability control turned off and I got a V6 turbo under the hood

I'm getting really good feedback from this chassis just a little light oversteer no fear good torque an automatic shifting well break pedal little long not the most amazing breaks I've ever felt they're adequate the Cadillac is well-controlled over that jump just did some cars go nuts there high speed turn eight it's a very rough corner believe it or not this car has a good ride thru here that's a lot less bouncing around that we normally feel this part of the track at Willow Springs down into nine wow it just points.

Wow good steering response a little numb in terms of the feel still you can't get around that GM personality but real good turn in lets try it in one kick it down in the apex floor it look at that balance nicely balanced chassis well damped around the carousel I don't know if you can see the way the tale is just right with me so nicely balanced you know I'm a sucker for a well-balanced car on the track into the tight stuff.

Dual wheel drive it was the power down really well known what people these cadillacs put the power down better than the Corvettes do think they to need to start talking to each other a little bit more flat over the jump the Cadillac is well behaved on the racetrack gotta say enjoyable ride moderate under steer when I want stability just a little bit of over steer when I'm aiming for the apex or accelerating off the corner there it is see that tail moving nice drift I'm not putting much wheel into the car and it just comes right around the corner.

Beautifully balanced not much of a sense of rule that's part of what I mean by the good damping look we turn in can hardly feeling it the weight transfers but there's not a lot of body motions really an impressive chassis soft brake pedal I'm not a big fan of that that's one thing I want more of in the ATS-V I want more braking power but I like the balance sounds like a V6 you can tell it's not a V8 but it has the strong torque wide power of a V8 very impressive car on track.

I'd like a little bit more breaking but I'm really impressed with the balance of the chassis the lack of feel of body roll is minimal really like that and I like this torque smooth V6 doesn't have the same kind of brutal animal feel of the old CTS V8 but it goes good cross the start finish line 132 miles an hour not bad Cadillac.

Leaving pit lane in mercedes-benz AMG c63 s feels firm already the cracks in the pavement thump hitting hard but we're in race mode and I have the traction and stability control turned off do not try this at home I like the sound right off the back yeah I meaty got a little V8 rumble thats the AMG tradition still alive there's a nice kick.

On shift pow those shifts are like that flooring it down the front straightaway the rear tires are just graveling for grip this is a torque machine the AMG is making some good power putting the power down reasonably well again not much body roll another nicely balanced machine dive and the roll are nicely controlled looks like we can knock the tail loose with power it's got a little more tendency to over steer like the breaks a lot better in the AMG pedal firm response is quick much more confident and breaking the AMG then I wasn't a Cadillac stable for the high.

Speed turn eight that's a 120 folks down in the nine point at the apex there's that little bit of over steer that the AMG has that the ATS-V does not Cadillac is a little more balanced in terms of it's weight a little more balanced in terms of its cornering behavior them but this is still a great car and it works on track steering has a more precise feel and more feedback than the Cadillac does a little bit more loose here see the corrections through this long carousel sweeper fun though love this car point it down that apex gas it there's that little bit oversteer that torque just launches us up the hill.

Driving back to back here real clear Cadillac puts the power down better than the AMG c63 does look at that right there but you know what it's still fun i'm enjoying a little bit of power over steer 'cause it's predictable it's usable this cars hauling the mail both cars rocket down the straightaway both cars tremendous fun on the race track love the sounds the feel of torque and the power of the AMG it's a more meaty more racy more brutal kind of feel the Cadillac a little.

More refined a little more friendly AMG is a little more mean if you had a AMG before you'll know thats how they are that personalities still there it rumbles it's powerful it's macho the Cadillac is very effective but it does it in a smoother quieter gentler very balanced way and it's going to take the hot laps to tell me which ones faster car let's go find out right now who wins it on the watch and so if all you care about is performance the sports sedan for you is the surprising Cadillac ATS-V not only does it outperform the AMG in every single metric but the C

63 is the S model and therefore cost much more however I'm of the opinion that cars are about much more than numbers when you boil it all down cars are about how they make you feel I love the sounds and the feel of torque and power besides and decide if you're the type of person thrilled by tenths of a second of advantages shouldn't you be looking at spect racers instead of leather-wrapped performance sedans the point is I like nearly everything about the AMG more than I like the Cadillac and that's why the winner of this head-to-head is

The Mercedes AMG c63 s either way you go there both better than a bmw m3 to a Cadillac is done here as he built this incredibly competent love it Lexus rx300 58 it that's the color that you both current on brown Lawrence Welk package there are just a few times when I was in a corner and if I specify applied power aggressively I got a downshift in its power over steered more than I wanted
